Got so much love for Giant Step, still bringing it after all these years. Also love the fact the parties they throw have great DJ's and musicians at great venues and are free! I got there a bit late and missed Rich Medina's set, surrounded by a mob under the discoball was a small group of afro-latin musicians groovin' but with no mic's so couldn't hear much and it was like a sauna which is apropos since we were at Le Bain. Joe Clausell got on the decks and dropped some heat.
It got too hot in there so me and my boy Small Change hopped in his ride and hit up BBar for Beige's last night. Was ultra-packed and paid our respects and dipped to see DJ Shorty at Rose Bar to pay some more respect and called it an early night.
The Legend working hard from his Mac! Times have changed... Last year I was appalled at his selections but this time he stuck with the goodies even dropping "Lost My Sonia" by Cocoa Tea. Was gonna scoop this piece up while Marco was in the deli but he's still quick on his feet.
Walked over to Clic Gallery for Wiz book signing, some good work but was a little pricey for me ($150). Saw this piece walking west on broome and while heading to Minetta Tavern I see this amidst all the old-school Italian spots on Macdougal. After a quick stop at 5ninth I hop train uptown to Hudson Hotel for The Martinez Brothers. The line was long and doorman said they were at capacity but then Maurice came by saw me and pulled me in and got me a Stella. There's still some old-school courtesy alive!
Giant Step blessing us monthly at Good Units in the basement of the Hudson Hotel. Raw space is not great for sound quality but feels like a true old-school outlaw party. Got there a bit late heard he was all over the place in a good way. He was well into a Prince and affiliates set then disco-funk-classics then Fela then he used effects on Spottieottiedopaliscious and Umi Says and for an encore blew our ears out with Roots version of Din Da Da!
